News ArticlesDeck collapses at Fort Kent, 15 tumbleFORT KENT- A second-story apartment deck collapsed during a party early Sunday, sending 15 people to the ground, including five who were taken to a hospital. Police said the deck at the Theriault apartment complex at Charette Hill fell about nine feet about 12:30 a.m. Five of the 15 were taken by ambulance to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent. All but two were treated, then released. Up to 20 people were in the apartment for the party when the collapse occurred, apparently because of the combined weight on the deck, according to Fort Kent police Officer Charles Richard. Richard said Sunday he was unsure who owns the apartment complex. The two most seriously injured remained in the hospital Sunday morning. Matt Granatowski, 20, of Soldier Pond was in stable condition at the Fort Kent facility and was expected to be released later in the day, according to a hospital official. Crystal Daigle, 21, of Fort Kent was treated at the hospital, then transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, the same hospital official said. A nursing supervisor at EMMC said Sunday that Daigle was in fair condition. Treated for their injuries were Adam Madore, 18, of Eagle Lake, Crissa Granatowski, Matt's sister, 18, of Soldier Pond and a 16-year-old female from the Fort Kent area. Richard said he was called to the apartment complex shortly after midnight after a resident complained about loud noises coming from the building. He said he advised people to keep the noise down and left to continue his patrol. About an hour later Richard received another radio call that reported a possible gunshot at the same apartment. Seconds after he received that radio traffic, a local ambulance attendant advised him of the collapse of a deck. "It was a little chaotic," Richard recalled of the scene. He said that the partygoers who were not injured were helping those who were injured. Richard said he could tell quickly that two of the people had fairly serious injuries. Two ambulances from Fort Kent and a third from Eagle Lake responded to the call, according to Richard. |
