News ArticlesDeck Collapse Injures FiveSource: Copyright 2004 by Wpxi.com, Story by Vince Sims ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Imagine an outdoor party atmosphere with family and friends by your side -- and then suddenly the ground falls out from under you. That's what happened Sunday at a Ross Township home when the family's deck collapsed. Officials said as a first Communion party was wrapping up, the deck, with approximately 18 to 20 people on it, collapsed about 7 feet to the ground. Ten to 15 people were evaluated on scene and five were taken to a hospital. The owner reportedly bought the house with the deck already attached. Officials said a building inspector went to the house on Jacks Run Road Sunday to evaluate the damage, but hasn't released his findings. The good news is that no one was seriously hurt. The homeowner said the five people taken to the hospital suffered only minor injuries and are recovering at home. Building inspectors said there are rules and regulations when building a deck. The homeowner must first get a building permit and inspectors will be out to the site at least three times during construction, and a final time to approve the site. |
