News Articles11 injured in Gilford deck collapseGILFORD, N.H. The deck on a rental house collapsed Sunday night during a birthday party for a woman who turned 80 and was among 11 people treated at a hospital. Deputy Fire Chief Jim Hayes said most suffered cuts and bruises and back and ankle injuries. Others were treated at the scene. He said nearly 40 people were on the deck when it collapsed without warning at about 8:45 and dropped people about 10 feet to the ground. "We were very fortunate these people were not hurt worse than they were, and that more people weren't injured," Hayes said. The deck was about 12 feet wide and about 80 feet long on the back of the main house of a rental complex of cottages on Lake Winnipesaukee. Relatives and friends of the birthday woman, including children, had come from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts for the celebration. The cause of the collapse is not known. The Gilford building inspector was to begin an investigation Monday. |
