News ArticlesChateau Knoll's Deck Debacle So when city officials did a routine rental property inspection at Chateau Knoll and found the decks in disrepair, they took action. "Many of the decks on the building were not structurally sound," says building official, Bill Connors. "We had concerns about people being out on them." The city of Bettendorf spent a notice to the manager of Chateau Knoll telling them to make about 130 decks inaccessible within 24 hours. Residents say that's the only explanation they've gotten. "That was it, a note saying it might be unsafe to go out there," says Chateau resident, David Purdy. "I wish they'd explain more to us what's wrong but they haven't yet." Connors says decks built using untreated wood rot away faster over time. This is the case with Chateau Knoll. "Basically what's holding the decks in place are just the sheer strength of the nails and code doesn't allow that," says Connors. We spoke with the property manager of Chateau Knoll. He told us that estimates have already been done and repair work will begin by mid-April. Most decks just need a board replaced here and there. But about 15 decks need to be completely replaced. The manager at Chateau Knoll mentioned the disrepair of the decks was left behind from previous owners of the property. He says they're trying to have everyone's decks repaired as soon as they can. |
