Porch collapse results in police officer injury

By JOHN RICHMEIER, Times Staff Writer
Published: Monday, June 5, 2006 9:16 AM CDT

A Leavenworth police officer was injured Thursday when the porch he was standing on during an arrest collapsed, according to a department spokesman.

Sgt. William Slusher had not returned to duty on Friday.

“He’s probably out for a about week to 10 days,” said Maj. Pat Kitchens, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

Slusher had gone to a residence Thursday in the 1500 block of Kenton Street to arrest a 46-year-old man on a Leavenworth County warrant for aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer.

Several officers had gone to the scene. Members of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also were on hand because they wanted to interview the man as part of an unrelated case, Kitchens said.

The man was taken into custody without incident. Everyone except Slusher had moved off the wooden porch at the time it collapsed.

“The entire thing collapsed,” Kitchens said.

Slusher ended up falling about eight to 10 feet, Kitchens said.

It happened at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Slusher was taken to Saint John Hospital, treated for injuries and released.

Not many details were provided about Slusher’s injuries but Kitchens said they were not life threatening.

A city inspector looked at the porch and initial conclusions were that the lumber was decayed and the structure was improperly attached and supported, Kitchens said.
