Our Study on Deck Collapse Now Available!
For anyone involved in the design, construction, remodeling, repair or inspection of decks, a comprehensive study relating to the occurrence and reporting of deck collapses from January 2000 to December 2006 has been released by DeckLok Bracket Systems, LLC. Some noteworthy examples from the report include:
- The percentage of reported collapses that occur during “collapse season”.
- The percentage of people who are on a deck when it collapses that are injured or killed.
- How many deaths since 2000 as a direct result to a deck collapse.

The DeckLok Bracket System
Our system has been engineered to create a code compliant connection for the railing and the ledger. It is designed to provide tremendous strength and longevity. Unlike a nailed connection, our system can be periodically serviced by tightening the bolts as needed.
DeckLok is an inexpensive and easy to install deck bracket system that far surpasses the connection strength of most deck construction methods. It is engineered for strength AND flexibility.
By adding DeckLok to current construction methods, the deck will be IRC 2006 Safety Code Compliant (with up to 1500% stronger deck connections)!
DeckLok helps to reduce the risk of injury and liability. Most deck collapses are due to a failure between the deck’s ledger board and the rim joist of the house. Usually, live loads cause the ledger and/or house rim joist to vibrate and become loose. The deck then creeps away from the house’s foundation and falls.
Builders virtually always use nails to install the rim joist. So, even when the ledger board is bolted onto the rim joist, only nails hold the rim joist to the house. Nailed connections must not be relied on to provide lateral resistance.
Similarly, the deck’s railing system is bolted to the deck band board. However, the band board is usually nailed or screwed to the end grain of the deck’s floor joists. Over time, these fasteners work loose and detach while under load. This happens when people lean against the rail, expecting support.
DeckLok Brackets provides tremendous resistance to deck pullout and railing failure. DeckLok increased rail post strength, provides a stronger stair stringer to deck connection, and anchors the deck to the structure of the house. |
